Our Mission
The mission of the Eleven Hundred Torches campaign is to encourage hundreds of people to serve others. Inspired by the life of advocate and activist Jana Mackey, and motivated into action by her death, Eleven Hundred Torches was created to inspire others to make a difference in our world. Ultimately, our purpose is to document 1100 people and their stories of community service and/or advocacy.
We aim to promote advocacy, while fostering volunteerism and civic servitude. It is our hope to link advocates to causes and promote a robust network for inspiration, support and strength in numbers. We will offer opportunities to share updates, seek volunteers, and forge a strong civic network.
Our Goal
By mobilizing hundreds of citizens, it is our goal to ever so slightly, “change the course of history”. Through the Eleven Hundred Torches campaign we hope to produce a world that is more giving, more caring and more just. Through our work and this campaign we hope to produce a society where all people are treated with dignity and respect. Above all else, Jana stood and fought for equality for all. Finally, it is our hope that this one fallen torch has ignited the world for social change.

Our Volunteer Campaign Team
The Eleven Hundred Torches volunteer campaign team is comprised of nearly two dozen dedicated citizens motivated by Jana’s legacy. From the states of California, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas and Texas, these volunteers understand the difference Jana sought to make in this world, and are committed to helping others carry on her torch.

About Our Campaign Name – Eleven Hundred Torches |
Our campaign name is symbolic of the 1100 plus people crammed into Lawrence, Kansas’ Liberty Hall on July 9, 2008 to hear about and celebrate Jana Mackey’s life. The overflowing crowd was asked by the speakers of the event to pick up the young activist’s torch and carry her work forward.
